Oh what a world

Day 4

--STATS--

Artist: Rufus Wainwright

Genre: so called "pop" however, I wouldn't call it that

Album: Want one

Released: 2004

Men reading fashion magazines.
Oh what a world it seems we live in.
Straight men...
Oh what a world we live in.

Why am I always on a plane, or a fast train.
Oh what a world my parents gave me,
always traveling but not in love....

Still I think I'm doing fine.
Wouldn't it be a lovely headline,
Life is beautiful on the New York times...

(Repeats two more times as music becomes more dramatic.)

Yes. This is an interesting song. All Rufus Wainwrights songs are quite interesting in them selves...
This song imparticular makes me feel like I am at a circus. I see bright colors. The beginning, what is that? A trombone? A tuba? I'm not sure...but it's perfection. The song is simple-- very few lyrics describing what I believe to be his childhood growing up with a folk singing mother & father ....he himself becoming involved in showbiz as a teenager-- "Why am I always on a plane or a fast train..."

I was introduced to mister Wainwright by my room mate during the year I was attending Northwest Nannies in Lake Oswego (2003-2004). She was new in town, and was obsessed with this guy. She convinced me to buy a ticket to see him perform at The Aladdin Theater in Portland with her. Watching him perform, I realized two things. That we were truly in the presence of something strangely great & that I had seen him the prior month on Ellen. Way cool.

Some people may find Wainwright to be too flamboyant in style & such, but really, there many sides to Rufus. You may on one night, get a very reserved quiet man who stays mostly at the piano. On other nights, you might find him wearing a witches hat, smoking a cigarette & commenting on his awesome dancing skills-- in the middle of a number. You just really never know. One thing is not debatable, however. He's got real talent, and he's worth a listen. Other than "Oh what a world" I also like "Cigarettes & chocolate milk". Mmm... chocolate milk. I think it is really time to sign off, as my eyeballs are starting to burn & I am rambling...

And what do you think? What does this song mean to you?
