Nothing compares to you

Day 5

--STATS--

Artist: Sinead 'O Conner

Genre: Alternative pop rock

Album: I do not want what I haven't got

Released: 1990

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
since you took your love away.
I go out every night and sleep all day
since you took your love away.
since you been gone I can do what ever I want,
I can see who ever I choose.
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant,
but nothing--
I said nothing can take away these blues.
Cause nothing compares,
nothing compares to you.

It's been so lonely without you here,
like a bird without a song.
nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling.
Tell me baby, where did I go wrong?
I could put my arms around every boy I see,
but they'd only remind me of you.
I went to the doctor and guess what he told me--
guess what he told me. He said
girl you better try to have fun no matter what you do,
but he's a fool,
cause nothing compares,
nothing compares to you.

All the flowers that you planted in the backyard
all died when you went away.
I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard,
but I'm willing to give it another try
cause nothing compares,
nothing compares to you.
Nothing compares,
nothing compares to you.
Nothing compares,
nothing compares to you....

Apparently, this is the best song to have ever existed, or at least it seems that way this week.
For one thing, this is the song that made me consider starting this blog in the first place. When searching out songs from the 90's that I hadn't heard in ages, this is one among others I found. This one stuck with me, though the actual melody and lyrics were a bit fuzzy in my head. I remember it being mellow, sweet, passionate in it's sincerity & very well liked in general. I thought it was worth the download. Oddly enough, the next day, VH1 was running a special-- top 100 songs of the 1990's. A past schoolmate of mine, after watching it, mentioned the song on her facebook. A coincidence, I thought. That night while channel flipping, I came across a show of interest. They were featuring Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Burton & Johhny Depp ( I pretty certain this episode was made just for me). Strangely enough, they also had Sinead 'O Conner singing her big time hit from the '90's "nothing compares to you." OK, now it was just getting weird. On top of it all, my best friend had just sent me her list of her top fifteen favorite songs, which of course, included this song. So, it seems the universe is pulling for this one.

OK, it may not be the best song ever, but it certainly is one of the top songs to come out of the 90's. If VH1 says it, then it must be so. It seems to be timeless, as well. I introduced it to my thirteen year old sister, who likes artists like Keisha & Lady Gaga, and she loved it. She wants to add it to her IPOD. I believe the song appeals to many generations for several reasons, but I will just touch on a couple. The melody is so low-key. Nothing annoying, loud or obnoxious to bother older ears, & the powerful lyrics are easy to relate to. Boy leaves girl. Girl is sad. Happens all the time, so yes-- that makes it easy to relate to, and at the same time, this song is very personal. " All the flowers that you planted in the back yard, all died when you went away".. she sings very quietly, as if she is so choked up with emotion. The title in it's self is very powerful. Nothing compares to you. That is an end all.

If you haven't heard this song yet, it's not too late to be apart of the experience that is "Nothing compares to you." Everyone I have talked to so far has fond memories of this song. This song was actually written by Prince, & originally covered by another group before Sinead 'O Conner. Not as good, which just goes to show you that arrangement & personal touch can have everything to do with the success of a song, even if the lyrics are absolutely amazing. I really encourage you to listen to this song. Actually, all songs the songs I write about that you've never heard of, or would even consider. It's good to have an open mind, especially when it comes to music. I dare you to take the challenge. 365 days of music. Of great music? Maybe. You wont know until you give it a try. Why not?

Soo...what does this song mean to you?

You will have to youtube this one to watch it. Sorry guys. Worth it though.
