Oh we can go to the tropics,
sip Pina Coladas,
Shawty I can take you dare....
Or we can go to the slums,
where killers get hung,
shawty I can take you dare....
You know I can take ya ( I can take ya),
I can take ya ( I can take ya),
shawty I can take you dare....
Baby girl, I know it's rough but come with me,
we can take a trip to da hood.
It's no problem, girl it's my city,
I could take you dare.
Little kid with guns only fifteen,
roamin' da streets up to know good.
When gun shots fly, watch us run quickly,
I can show you where.
As long as your with me,
baby, you'll be alright.
I'm known in the ghetto,
girl, just stay by my side.
Or we could leave the slums,
go to paradise.
Babies, 'sup to you,
it's what ever you like....
Oh we can go to the tropics,
sip Pina Coladas,
Shawty I can take you dare....
Or we can go to the slums,
where killers get hung,
shawty I can take you dare....
You know I can take ya ( I can take ya),
I can take ya ( I can take ya),
shawty I can take you dare....
Shawty come with me, it's no worry,
I know da bad men, where they all stay.
Bullets fly past you in a hurry,
this is no gun play.
Don't be scared to know the West Indies,
it's Jamaica, dat's where I'm from.
Might see something dat your not use to,
welcome to da slums.
As long as your with me,
baby, you'll be alright.
I'm known in the ghetto,
girl, just stay by my side.
Or we could leave the slums,
go to paradise.
Babies, 'sup to you,
it's what ever you like....
Oh we can go to the tropics,
sip Pina Coladas,
Shawty I can take you dare....
Or we can go to the slums,
where killers get hung,
shawty I can take you dare....
You know I can take ya ( I can take ya),
I can take ya ( I can take ya),
shawty I can take you dare....
Oh we ( oh we)
can go ( can go)
to a place (to a place)
I know you gonna like...
The beach ( the beach),
the breeze (the breeze),
West Indies,
I call it paradise....
Oh we can go to the tropics,
sip Pina Coladas,
Shawty I can take you dare....
Or we can go to the slums,
where killers get hung,
shawty I can take you dare....
You know I can take ya ( I can take ya),
I can take ya ( I can take ya),
shawty I can take you dare....
You know I can take ya ( I can take ya),
I can take ya ( I can take ya),
shawty I can take you dare....
* For people who are not quite in touch with current hip-hop & Jamaican lingo, "shawty" or "shorty" is a hot girl or girlfriend...please correct me if I'm wrong. Dare, da, & dat is the equivalent to there, the & that. Thanks.
This number is an upbeat dance flick by Sean Kingston, an up & coming hip-hop Jamaican-American reggae fusion singer (phew! That's a mouth-full!). Off his self-titled album Sean Kingston, his other hit songs of the year were "Me love" & "Beautiful girls" featuring a borrowed baseline, originally used in Ben E. Kings "Stand by me" .
I revel in this song mostly just for the way it always makes me want to dance when I hear it. Either that, or I want a Pina Colada. Both are fun. I think that along with songs with deep lyrical meaning & poetic flow, everyone should have on their repertoire of great tunes, songs that just make you want to dance. Nothing more to it. This one defiantly does it for me. With an obvious reggae feel to it, a & poppin' beat, this song has been played in clubs all over the world. I thoroughly enjoy a little reggae in my music, and do occasionally crave the rhythm of a good hip-hop song. This ditty combines both into one. Absolutely love it. The hint of danger in the lyrics describing the slums of the West Indies makes it exciting as well, & for those who are uniformed of the current affliction in Jamaica, you can now consider your self informed. On the other hand, the mention of the tropics is also exciting, and again makes me want a Pina Colada.
The only down side to this song is I can't help but move when I hear it. This usually is not a bad thing. However, tonight I was hit with a sudden flu-like sickness. After taking a Tylenol, some air-borne & a hot bath, I decided the best thing for me would be to lay on the couch with my IPOD & headphones. I opted to give this song another listen to get myself in the mood to write this blog. Unfortunately, as this song makes me want to move, it was a very painful experience. By the end of the song, I wasn't sure what hurt me the most-- moving to the song, or trying to resist moving.... In Heinz sight, it really wasn't a good idea after all.
What about you? What does this song mean for you?
