Some where only we know

Day 11

--STATS--

Group: Keane

Genre: Alternative rock

Album: Hopes and Dreams

Released: 2004

I walked across an empty land,
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand.
I felt the earth beneath my feet,
sat by the river, and it made me complete.

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old & I need something to rely on.
So tell me when your gonna let me in,
I'm getting tired & I need somewhere to begin.

I came across a fallen tree.
I felt the branches of it looking at me.
Is this the place we use to love?
Is this the place that we've been dreaming of.

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old & I need something to rely on.
So tell me when your gonna let me in,
I'm getting tired & I need somewhere to begin.

And if you have a minute, why don't we go,
talk about it somewhere only we know.
This could be the end of everything,
so why don't we go
somewhere only we know?

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old & I need something to rely on.
So tell me when your gonna let me in,
I'm getting tired & I need somewhere to begin.

And if you have a minute, why don't we go,
talk about it somewhere only we know.
This could be the end of everything,
so why don't we go?
So why don't we go?

This could be the end of everything,
so why don't we go
somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know.

What I really enjoy about this group is their use of the piano in their songs rather than heavy guitar, common in most alternative rock groups. I feel that I really like this type of music the most, these groups like Keane, coldplay, or artists like David Gray & Amos Lee. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of mood I am in. I can be happy & high spirited, and acoustic alternative music would compliment that mood. I could be sad or slightly withdrawn, and this genre wouldn't be overpowering or too sappy. It is really just right, for me at least. I like the lyrics of this song, as well as the melody it accompanies. Back to nature. Back to something familiar. Something that has meaning, something only we know. " Oh simple thing, where have you gone?" That leaves me wondering where my simple thing has gone.

My simple thing is a plot of land in the Mt. Rainier area, in Washington state. I have--or had, really, been going there for a family camping vacation every fourth of July since I can remember. Many memories made there, all good times ( There was the "Car hits tree & almost runs over tents" incident of 2003. I don't count that one.). Simple, easy going fun. Back to nature. Back to the basics. Unfortunately, in recent years, I feel it has been taken from us. It's complicated, & I can't really talk about it here. It is lost to us. I hope not forever, though a part of it will always be gone.Taken. I didn't even get to share it with my children. "Oh simple thing, where have you gone?"

This song aside from it's meaning, makes me think of the end of the summer of 2006. My daughter was a newborn, & one of my best friends was living clear out in the middle of nowhere ( OK-- Elkton, Oregon. Look it up.) My husband & I, or just myself sometimes, would make the four hour drive out there to visit her, & her then boyfriend for the weekend. I have very fond memories of those times. The beginning of my journey through motherhood. It started there. In Elkton, we didn't have much to do. We had BBQ's, watched movies, went on walks. The boys enjoyed many beers & "manly" conversations. My friend & I enjoyed the quality time. On the weekend that I drove out there by myself, it was just her & I. Her boyfriend was away for work. On that Saturday, we took a trip to the nearest beach. It was a windy, yet warm day. It was Taylors first trip to the beach. I still keep a picture of that day with me, of myself holding my newborn daughter, her eyes squinting from the wind & sun. Me, trying to shield her from the elements. It is a beautiful picture. We played this album in the car on the way back. This song belongs to this memory.

What about you? What does this song mean to you?
